palau

so i have begun my post-law-school-life plan. after graduating i want to do a clerkship on the island of palau. the judge i work for told me about it. he has connnections over there so i hope that i can at least get an interview. judicial clerkships are for 1 year on the island of palau. its not as prestigious as getting a clerkship with a federal judge, but it still looks good on a resume, so it will help me get employment when i get back. the pay is $40,000. which isn't that great, but the government pays for housing. the government also pays for myself and a spouse to fly over there and they pay for all moving expenses. so while the pay isnt incredible, it would easily be enough to cover food, student loan repayments, and surfboard purchases. there really isnt much do on the island. that is if you dont like scuba diving or snorkling. or if you dont like traveling to islands in the south pacific. or kayaking, or surfing, or traveling to australia or japan on the weekends. (check out palau on google earth. be sure to start at your present location here in the u.s. - or elsewhere if you are one of my international readers - and then type in palau and see how far the trip would be, its pretty awesome)

so basically, this could be the greatest thing ever in my opinion. the only downfall, the spouse part. and not just that i dont have one, but it would be terribly boring to be over there alone and not have anyone to enjoy the island with. so i dont want to go alone, unless im planning on starting a life of lonliness and alcohol - which im not. (i hear that the natives drink a ton because there isnt anything else to do, clearly they forgot they can kayak through and explore the rock islands when they get bored). so i would rather have a partner in crime with me, but its got to be a good one because while im sure we can find many things to do, i would have to work every day from 9-5 (and it is only 8 hours a day, not 12 or 16 like other law jobs). which means that she will have to be able to entertain herself and be content on a tropical island all day long. i know it sounds great and fantastic, but some women might go nuts. those women are lame.

so i appreciate the current efforts of friends and family to set me up with ladies, but in the future, just be sure to remember palau. because if she and i work out, and then palau works out, but she doesnt work with palau, well, i just dont want to have to deal with a divorce while im over there. it would severely cut into my surf and snorkeling time. anyways, all interested applicants can apply below in the comments area: be sure to include contact information, a resume, photo, and contact information of a few female friends that you consider valid alternatives if we dont work out.

I just stumbled upon your blog. I am interviewing to clerk in Palau ... Did you ever do it? I'm nervous it won't help me get a job later. But the 40k legal-learning getaway seems great to me, especially since work in the US is so hard to come by. Let me know, please: june.fulton@gmail.com. (Or I'll try to find your blog again).
